‘Twisters’ star Glen Powell’s advice from Tom Cruise on navigating the ‘really loud’ world of fame

Image
Powell has put in the work over the years, facing ups and downs before solidifying his standing thanks to a few key roles, including appearing as a hotshot Navy pilot alongside Tom Cruise in 2022’s "Top Gun: Maverick." Cruise has very much taken Powell under his wing, even tailoring his pilot role after Powell gave him and director Joe Kosinski notes. In the original version of "Top Gun: Maverick" Powell read, his character was known as Slayer and wasn’t a good pilot, but got into the program through nepotism. Powell recalled telling them, in an interview with British GQ, "‘If I were editing this movie, I would cut him out immediately.’" ‘TOP GUN: MAVERICK’ STAR GLEN POWELL ALMOST WASN’T CAST: ‘I TOOK IT VERY PERSONALLY’ It was a bold move that paid off, and the role was changed to the final version of the character, named Hangman, a cocky character smoothed by Powell’s charm. "I said my piece to Tom about what I do and what I do well, and he listen...

Bob Newhart, legendary comedian, dead at 94

Image
Bob Newhart, whose stammering, deadpan unflappability carried him to stardom as a standup comedian and later in television and movies, has died, according to a statement from his longtime publicist Jerry Digney. He was 94. Digney said Newhart died in Los Angeles on Thursday morning after a series of short illnesses. He called the star’s passing an “end of an era in comedy.” Over five decades, Newhart’s popularity rarely waned, whether it was as the recording star of the comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” (the first comedy album to win the Grammy for album of the year), the lead in two top-rated television sitcoms, or a supporting actor in movies including “Catch-22” (in which he played the timid Maj. Major), “Cold Turkey” and “Elf.” He remains best known for the television shows, “The Bob Newhart Show” (1972-78) and “Newhart” (1982-90), both of which were built around his persona as a reasonable man put upon by crazies. Naomi Pomeroy, renowned chef and ‘Top Chef Masters’ star, dead at 49 in tubing accident

Image
Naomi Pomeroy, renowned chef and “Top Chef Masters” star, died in a tubing accident in Oregon over the weekend, local authorities said. She was 49. Pomeroy drowned in the Willamette River in Corvallis, Oregon, on Saturday, July 13th, according to a news release posted to Facebook by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). “An investigation by BCSO determined three floaters on tubes and a paddle board, secured together, were caught on an exposed snag in the water. One of the floaters, Naomi, was pulled under the water and held by the paddle board leash,” the sheriff’s release stated. The other two people were safely recovered from the water. Deputies searched the water using sonar, underwater cameras and drones, according to the statement, but authorities were at first unable to find Pomeroy’s body. On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office released an update to announce that Pomeroy’s body had been located on the Willamette River, roughly a half-mile upstream of Hyak Park between ...

Jerry Ferrara is cruising through the 20th anniversary of ‘Entourage.’ In an Escalade, of course

Image
There are plenty of actors who want more than anything to leave the characters that made them famous behind, but Jerry Ferrara is not one of them. Twenty years after the debut of “Entourage,” the man who played Salvatore “Turtle” Assante smiles as he talks to CNN about where he thinks his character – who ended the series becoming pretty successful – might be today. “Even though Turtle ended up being rich, I still think he’s driving Vince around in the Escalade,” Ferrara said. “Like, that’s just who they were. It wasn’t so much, ‘Well, now I have money, I don’t have to drive you.’ Those guys were family.” A beloved family at that. HBO aired the first episode of “Entourage” on July 18, 2004, and the story of up-and-coming actor Vincent Chase – played by Adrian Grenier – navigating new stardom in Los Angeles with the help of his crew of buddies from his native New York felt very meta, given that it shot the cast into the celebrity stratosphere. The core cast of “Entourage” – Grenie...

Adele’s ‘tank is quite empty at the minute.’ She’s planning a ‘big break’ from music

Just when you thought this summer couldn’t get any worse, Adele has gone and broken our hearts. The singer has reportedly said she’s taking a major break from the music scene. “My tank is quite empty at the minute,” she told German broadcaster ZDF in a recently shared interview. “I don’t have any plans for new music at all.” Adele gave the interview ahead of a 10-date residency in Munich. She’s planning on stepping away from the spotlight when her run is over. “I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while,” she told the outlet. Adele also talked about her feelings about being a celebrity. “I don’t like being famous,” she said. “I love that I get to make music all the time.” Adele has retreated from the music scene to refuel her creativity in the past. Her debut album, “19,” was released in 2008, while the follow-up, the critically acclaimed “21,” came out three years later. It took another four years before her third studio al...

NASA beams Missy Elliott song to Venus

Image
Missy Elliott's lyrics blasted off into space as NASA transmitted her song "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" 158 million miles from Earth to Venus, the space agency said Monday.  It took nearly 14 minutes for the hip-hop track to reach its destination. The Missy Elliott song is the second song ever transmitted into deep space, following up on the Beatles' "Across the Universe" in 2008.  "My song 'The Rain' has officially been transmitted all the way to Venus, the planet that symbolizes strength, beauty, and empowerment," Missy Elliott said in a social media post. "The sky is not the limit, it's just the beginning." There actually is rain on Venus, though because temperatures reach 860 degrees Fahrenheit, the drops, which fall from clouds made of sulfuric acid, evaporate "back into a never-ending toxic cloud," according to NASA.  Rolling Stone ranked "The Rain" one of its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time...

Biden considering proposals to reform Supreme Court

Image
Washington — President Biden is considering a series of proposals to reform the Supreme Court, including measures to establish term limits for justices and an enforceable ethics code, CBS News has learned. Any plans would require approval from Congress. The Washington Post was first to report Mr. Biden's expected support for changes to the Supreme Court. The president revealed in a call with the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Saturday that he's been working with experts on proposals to reform the nation's highest court to be announced soon, a source familiar with the call confirmed to CBS News. Mr. Biden did not tell the group what his plans are, but his willingness to engage on the issue marks a shift for the president, who led the Judiciary Committee while serving in the Senate. "It's not hyperbole to suggest Trump is literally an existential threat, an existential threat to the very Constitution of democracy we, we say we care about," Mr. Biden told t...
